Understanding FET Ear Tags

Want to know more about FET Tags? Look no further! We've compiled all you need to know about FET tags in one convenient place.

One such advancement that has gained popularity in recent years is the use of FET (Frequency Electric Transmission) ear tags. These small electronic devices offer a plethora of benefits, from enhancing livestock management to improving traceability and overall herd health.

What are FET Tags?

FET ear tags are identification devices designed to be attached to the ears of livestock, such as sheep and goats. They are available in electronic and non-electronic versions. The electronic versions utilise radio frequency technology to transmit unique identification numbers, allowing farmers to easily track and manage individual animals within their herds. FET tags typically consist of a small transponder encased in durable material, such as plastic or silicone, with an attached ear tag for secure placement on the animal's ear.

  • FET Tags are a fast and easy to apply single shot tag
  • They are available in RFID HDX and non-RFID
  • FET Tags have proven retention
  • The lightweight material makes it a great option to tag lambs, goats and small animals
  • Laser print delivers premium contrast and high visibility of the information printed on the tag

How Do Electronic FET Ear Tags Work?

The functionality of FET ear tags revolves around radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. Each tag contains a microchip programmed with a unique identification number that is wirelessly transmitted when activated by an RFID reader. The reader emits radio waves, which power the tag and prompt it to transmit its ID number back to the reader. This process allows farmers to quickly and accurately identify individual animals without the need for manual record-keeping.

Benefits of FET Ear Tags for Farmers

  1. Improved Livestock Management: FET ear tags streamline the process of identifying and tracking individual animals, enabling farmers to monitor their health, breeding history, and other essential data more efficiently.

  2. Enhanced Traceability: With FET tags, farmers can maintain detailed records of each animal's movements, vaccinations, and medical history. This level of traceability is crucial for ensuring food safety and meeting regulatory requirements.

  3. Increased Productivity: By facilitating quicker identification and data collection, FET ear tags help farmers make informed decisions regarding breeding programs, health interventions, and resource allocation, ultimately leading to improved productivity and profitability.

  4. Loss Prevention: FET tags enable swift identification of lost or stolen animals, reducing the risk of theft and increasing the likelihood of recovery.

  5. Compliance with Industry Standards: Many agricultural markets and regulatory bodies require livestock to be identified and traced throughout the supply chain. FET ear tags help farmers meet these standards efficiently and accurately.

How Do I Apply FET Tags?

FET Tags are a fast and easy to apply single shot tag.

1. Place the FET tag into the Z Tags FET Tagger. The male part of the tag should be positioned in the yellow jaw of the tagger, with the female part positioned in the white jaw.

NOTE: The image of the tags pin on the yellow jaw is a reminder that the male part of the tag should be positioned there.
2. Dip the tagger holding the ear tag into antiseptic or disinfectant solution.
3. Apply the FET tag through the ear at one third of the distance from the head avoiding the main blood vessels and the ridges of cartilage. In young animals, remember to allow for ear growth by leaving the FET tag to stick out by one-third of its length from the ear.

Always make sure the male part of the tag is fitted on the back of the ear. After applying the tag, the female part of the tag should be on the inside of the ear. For a visual guide on how to properly apply FET ear tags, please view the below user guide:
